John Jerde is very popular in Japan. He talks about “constructed worlds” and “entertainment spaces,” which pretty much describes Tokyo’s downtown districts.
He also designed the Mall of America, one Minnesota landmark I do not miss. I used to get claustrophobic in there, what with the roller coaster flying overhead and tiers and tiers of stores hawking everything from glass hummingbirds to Humvees. On the rare occasion we had to buy something there (they had a Hot Topic store, which carried everything the suburban goth needed to freak his parents out) I’d get so disoriented I’d forget what we were shopping for and come home with things like Dead Sea hand lotion and rhinestone wiener dog pins.

Welcome to the society of the spectacle?
